Welcome! We are glad you found us. By visiting our website, you have taken the first step towards a more balanced, stronger, healthier, and less stressful life. No matter how flexible or inflexible you are, regardless of your physical limitations, age, or body type, you can learn to safely practice yoga and experience its many benefits to body, mind, and spirit. Whether you choose an Iyengar, Purna, or alignment class, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned student, we are confident you will benefit from the intelligent, precise, and step-by-step manner of our approach to teaching yoga.

In yoga, we learn to bring our body and our mind to class, onto the mat, exactly how we are. We all begin where we are in that moment—even those of us with years of yoga experience. We plant our feet and toes on the mat and turn our attention inwards. We breathe. We breathe some more. We learn to be aware of every part of our body and how it moves…or doesn’t want to move! We try to notice, without judgment, the thoughts and feelings that arise. We don’t compare ourselves to the student next to us. We show up with an open mind, with a child’s sense of wonder, and we see what is possible…in that moment…for us. And we build and grow from there—towards a more harmonious experience of life. Really. It’s true. Yoga will transform you.

New to Yoga

If you have never practiced yoga, we recommend you start with either the Iyengar Slow & Mindful Yoga 6-week series, or with the weekly class called Alignment, Intro/Level I. These two classes are also great if it’s been a while since you practiced yoga and would like to review the fundamentals.

If you are not sure which class to take at One Center, please talk to our front desk staff or any of our teachers: they will be happy to advise you.

If you have health problems, be sure to check with your health care provider before taking yoga, so you can describe to your teacher what, if any, restrictions need to be respected. In all our classes, we use props, like bolsters and blocks, to allow students to adjust poses for optimal health, ease, and safety.

Ahimsa, nonviolence, and satya, truthfulness, are two of the Yamas—ethical standards defined in the Yoga Sutras—that we practice on and off the mat. To fully and safely benefit from a class, choose a level that corresponds to where you are right now in your yoga practice. This will change as you continue to practice, but start where you are! Read the class descriptions to find a good fit. If you need more guidance, ask our teachers or the folks at the front desk.

We offer several levels of Iyengar Yoga instruction. No matter your age or physical abilities, our Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers can guide you to an experience of yoga that is accessible and beneficial for the body, mind, and spirit. As Mr. Iyengar said, “The physical is a bridge to the spiritual.”

Certified Iyengar Yoga instructors are held to a rigorous standard. Only after years of training and evaluation do they become certified. They give clear demonstrations of the poses and often cite their specific benefits. Poses are taught in a sequenced, step-by-step manner that encourages the body to become stronger and more flexible over time, as the mind quiets and conscious awareness expands.

Instructors individualize corrections for students, who know they are observed and, if necessary, adjusted. Often, they modify poses with the use of props, such as blocks, blankets, straps, and chairs to ensure each student can experience the asana safely and deeply.

For more information about this approach, click on the tab “Iyengar Yoga.”

Iyengar Slow Yoga, 6-week series

This introductory series acquaints students new to yoga to the fundamentals of basic yoga postures in the Iyengar method. This is the foundational class to progress to Iyengar Level I or Alignment Level 1 classes, although many students choose to continue to attend this class beyond the six-week series. Slow Yoga is recommended for yoga students of all levels who enjoy a slow, mindful practice.

Iyengar, Level I

Appropriate for students who have completed the introductory Iyengar series, or who have some yoga experience and want to learn more of the scope and depth of the Iyengar method. Standing poses are emphasized, along with simple twists, sitting poses and chest openers. Students learn the basics of yoga with props. Preparatory poses for inversions are introduced. Basic breathing awareness is practiced.

Iyengar, Level II

Geared for students who are well practiced in Iyengar Level I postures. Basic postures are refined, and shoulderstand, headstand, full arm balance, and backbends are introduced with proper modifications for each student. Basic pranayama (specific breathing practices) is taught.

Iyengar, Level I/II

Perfect for students who have experience in Iyengar yoga and want to go deeper with their poses. This class challenges the newer student and gives them confidence to move into more challenging poses.

Iyengar, Level II/III

Designed for students with at least two years of Iyengar yoga training or alignment-based yoga. Students need to be strong in standing postures and able to maintain headstand and shoulderstand with confidence for five minutes. Headstand variations, intermediate postures, and seated pranayama are taught. A home practice should be well established.

Iyengar Donation Class, All Levels

The class welcomes students of all levels of Iyengar and alignment-based yoga. Modifications will be offered to customize the poses to each student’s ability.

Purna Yoga was developed by Aadil Palkhivala and his wife Savitri, based on years of experiential study of yoga and meditation. Purna means complete, so Purna Yoga addresses the entire person: body, mind, emotions and spirit.

To do this, Purna Yoga draws on four pillars of knowledge: Asana and Pranayama; Nutrition and Lifestyle Choices; Heartfull Meditation; and Applied Philosophy. The Asana and Pranayama are rooted in the alignment-oriented practice of B.K.S. Iyengar. The Nutrition and Lifestyle component draws on the best of Ayurveda, Chinese, and modern medicine to support the health of the body beyond just the physical practice of asana. Heartfull Meditation is a dynamic, transformational form of meditation that helps connect you with who you truly are, the unchanging Self within. Applied Philosophy takes the breadth and wisdom of the ancient yogic texts (the Vedas, Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, Hatha Pradipika the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the writings of Sri Aurobindo) and applies them in practical ways to modern living.

Although it has it roots in the Iyengar method of teaching asana and pranayama, Purna Yoga differs in that it organizes the poses into specific series (Hip Opening Series, Morning Series, Opening Series, Classical Surya Namaskar, Spinal Rejuvenation Series). Class always begins with Heartfull Meditation techniques and the Opening Series. Students can also expect sprinklings of applied philosophy, discussions about nutrition and lifestyle choices, and even the recitation of poetry throughout the asana practice.

Purna Yoga & Meditation, All Levels

Want to meditate but find sitting still daunting? Looking for the tools to manage the stress in your life? Learn how to feel calm, energized, and focused. Develop a deeper relationship with your Self. Classes blend alignment-based yoga sequences developed by Aadil Palkhivala and easy-to-learn Heartfull Meditation techniques as taught by Savitri (the founders of Purna Yoga). Appropriate for all students interested in practicing yoga as a way to connect more deeply with the inner Self, the inner purpose, and most importantly, the inner smile.

These classes use principles of aligning the body so the spine and torso are correctly positioned to maximize breathing, improve strength and balance in all yoga postures, and minimize injury. In this approach, students move into and out of a single asana at a time, rather than through a flow sequence, although occasionally a few poses are linked slowly and mindfully.

Alignment, All Levels

“All Levels” means the class is appropriate for students who have taken at least six Level 1 or beginner yoga classes. A well rounded sequence of poses is taught, ranging from standing poses, twists, chest openers, back bends, and inversions. Teachers demonstrate most of the poses and offer variations to safely match the abilities of students who have taken classes at levels 1 through 3.

Alignment, Level I

Classes at this level are perfect for students with limited yoga experience, who are new to alignment-based yoga, or who want a refresher class. Basic poses are taught to build strength as well as flexibility. The class includes a range of standing postures, simple twists, chest openers, and supported inversions. Progressions will be offered depending on a student’s experience and ability.

Alignment, Level II

Classes at this level deepen and expand the study of standing postures, headstand, shoulder stand, arm balances, unsupported backbends, pranayama, and the way yogic philosophy affects our lives. Students who attend this class should be developing a consistent, self-directed practice.

We offer weekly and special 2 & 3-hour weekend classes designed to strengthen and heal vulnerable areas of the body, such as the back, knees, neck, and shoulders. Props, such as bolsters, blocks, and straps are used to permit students to adjust poses for optimal access and safety, and to prevent further injury. Students of all ages benefit from these classes as needed.

Other therapeutic classes are geared towards students over the age of 50, who may have age-related physical issues and want to improve their balance, maintain bone density, gain muscle strength and flexibility, or lower their blood pressure. Many of these students proudly define themselves as seniors, who have experienced firsthand the physical and emotional benefits of a consistent yoga practice.

Back Care Basics

This class guides students into poses that safely and effectively stretch and strengthen the back. Whether you are dealing with chronic back issues or a recent injury, this class can help you improve back function and reduce and heal back pain. This is an all levels class.
